The earthquake measuring 7.9 was felt as a jolt in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The epicentre was near Kutch (Gujarat) Pakistan border. It was the worst ever earthquake in the Indian subcontinent. The intensity of the earthquake was noted to be of 7.9 on the Richter Scale. On 25 January, 2011, an earthquake of magnitude 6.2 was recorded in the same region of Kutch. The Bhuj earthquake was India's most destructive earthquake since the 1991 Andhra Pradesh earthquake, which claimed 22,000 lives, and the 1993 Meghalaya earthquake, which claimed over 50,000 lives. Both the Indian Union and Pakistan were affected by this earthquake. Only a few areas of Gujarat were affected by this earthquake, but the effects are still felt to this date. The earthquake resulted in the deaths of 2,742 people and injuring 8,902. Thousands of homes, roads, and other buildings have been destroyed. In Gujarat, 1,468 buildings collapsed and 117 remain un-rehabilitated. Most of the buildings collapsed near Gujarat's coastal belt of Saurashtra region. Thousands of people are still living in tents or temporary shelters. More than 500 people have died in Gujarat due to this earthquake. As of 1 May, 2001, the relief work is going on in many parts of the state. The state government, which took this responsibility upon itself, has also released funds to the affected people.
