This page contains a list of all those awarded the Bharat Ratna award. The Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian honour in India and is awarded in four categories (Arts, Literature, Science and Civilian).
In addition to the four categories, the President of India also awards Bharat Ratna awards for individual contributions to the Indian National Movement and Indian Independence Movement. In 2007, the President of India had announced a Bharat Ratna award for Potti Sreeramulu, the Telugu actor and leader of the Praja Socialist Party.
In 2012, following criticism of the Bharat Ratna awards, the President of India announced that all the awards would be revoked.
**In 2012, the former Indian Railways Minister, Suresh Prabhu was nominated for the award. But he was refused by the central government of India. The central government explained that, "The President may award the Bharat Ratna only to living persons and may not posthumously confer the award on any person". In the event of the death of the person, the posthumous award can be made to the wife and family members.
